Scale of Wind
Some paintings unfold gradually, revealing themselves one layer at a time.
Created during a sleepless night, Scale of Wind emerged from slow palette knife swipes across ribbons of color, creating intricate cellular patterns and whimsical forms that seemed to shift each time I looked at them.
When my son saw the finished painting, he thought it looked like wind gently blowing across the scales of a magical creature. And just like that, the title was born.
His interpretation seemed to perfectly capture the feeling of the piece and the thoughts drifting through my mind during those quiet hours between night and morning. I also loved the double meaning in the name. Like musical notes on a scale carried upward by the wind, the painting feels as though it grows lighter and more airy as it rises.
Like wind itself, the painting resists being pinned down to any one thing. There is movement here, but also stillness. Energy, but also calm.
It is a reminder that even restless moments can hold unexpected beauty.
Perhaps I should paint in the wee hours of the morning more often.
